This past Tuesday, I had the joy of photographing a family session at Montage Palmetto Bluff—a location that continues to be one of the most requested for my family photography sessions in the Lowcountry. Returning for their second summer at the resort, Michael, Erica, and their daughters Cecily and Madison traveled from Chicago to escape the lingering cold and spend time outdoors, making the most of the warm South Carolina coast.

Unlike their first visit, where they stayed at the hotel, this year they chose one of the private cottages tucked within the property, giving them a quieter, more residential experience. Their days have been filled with time on the water and long bike rides along the Spanish moss-lined paths.=, exactly the kind of moments that inspire families to want lasting images.

We scheduled their session in the late afternoon, when the light softens and adds a natural warmth to both film and digital photography. That golden hour glow brought a beautiful dimension to each frame, and it complemented the family’s easygoing energy perfectly. We have photographed families in the winter, but must say, that we love the green in the spring and summer months!

One of the most meaningful moments of our time together was walking to a swing that holds sentimental value: it’s the same spot where the girls were photographed years ago. Seeing them return, a little taller now, with the same carefree smiles, felt like capturing a continuation of a story already in progress.

To end the session, the girls enjoyed ice cream from RT’s Market, a familiar stop during their past and present visits. These candid moments—hands sticky with melted cones, laughter carrying on the breeze—are often what make family vacation sessions truly timeless.
