Whitney & Spence | Athens Anniversary Session

Whitney owns Whitewood Events, a luxury wedding planning + styling service based in Athens, Georgia. She and I crossed paths nearly two years ago and had the opportunity to work together on multiple projects and weddings. She has become a dear friend of mine not only because she is so talented and an expert in her field, but also because we are sentimentalists at heart and love a gorgeous, well-designed bouquet. Anybody who ends up crossing paths with Whitney is lucky: her love for others and joy for this life is infectious. One of the things that I have admired so deeply about her is her ability to balance loving her family well, and running a business focused on serving others. Truly, this is the definition of somebody who is selfless and and she does this with a grace and gentleness that’s so distinguishable. I aspire to be like her in so many ways.

Whitney and Spence met when they were young just on the outskirts of Athens, Georgia. Their parents had been friends for a long time and eventually, fate had the two meet. This year they celebrate 9 years of marriage and Whitney asked me to photograph them both at locations near and dear to their heart. We first began at Spence’s childhood farm, where there were donkeys and horses roaming together. Spencer told us stories about how he trained and worked with those horses when he was young, and how the house on the property was where he and Whitney spent their first years as a married couple together. We then went to the location where Spence proposed to Whitney, and it also happened to be where they went on their first date. Spence taught Whitney how to fish, though she didn’t like fishing and on their first date they ended up spending hours talking together. It was the beginning of something beautiful, and afterwards they became inseparable.

These two have walked through so much together and now have two beautiful daughters (who also have Whitney’s stunning eyes). I’m so honored to have been able to document this part of their story, and I hope that these images move you as much as they did for me.
